This is the way to start a movie. The phone conversation with at the beginning draws you in by not naming this person they are searching for or even giving any info about them, but just the effect their presence has on the callers. Then there’s the derelict setting and the cops moving in on Trinity immediately marking her an outlaw in this dark world. The ease in which she defeats them (with innovative fight choreography too) immediately shows her strength, followed by her complete terror of the emotionless agents. An excellent way to build the menace of an antagonist without needing any explanation, narration, or flashback. The chase shows both her fear, her grace, as well as the agents’ implacable pursuit that shows just a glimpse of their own power. Finally the escape seemingly right into the phone shows the world she exists in is not surface level either.

I heard that the Wachowskis blew their entire budget on the opening scene to show to the studio, and when they saw it, they liked it so much that they gave them a large budget for the rest of the film.
