Hello,

Currently having an issue with the Electric Power Steering in my 2013 Ibiza FR.

It started a while back when I started the car and the EPS did not kick in.

A simple restart fixed it, but I was conscious of it failing. This happened a few more times with a few weeks in between.

Recently, the car has been unable to start the EPS. Restarts haven’t worked, and it seems to fail for a long time until I get a lucky start and it works. I managed to get it to the garage and explained the issue.

They agreed there was an issue, as when they were attempting to drive it in they had no EPS, but it kicked in suddenly when getting it into the shop.

Because of it working suddenly, it has apparently not been logged as a fault code anywhere? The mechanic has advised that they could go through replacing up to four things in the car but wouldn’t be sure which one is actually causing the problem. So advised that I take the car back and keep driving until the fault is no longer magically fixing itself. I managed to get the car home, but when attempting to start the car this morning it simply would not work.

I’m looking for a bit of advice on what I could possibly do at home to get this sorted? Like I say, the mechanics also seemed to be at a bit of a loss and suggested “We’re mechanics, not electricians, so it’s hard to figure it out”.

Volkswagen released a software update last year to solve exactly these issues: if your car hasn’t seen a dealership in a while it’s time to plan a visit, or at least to visit an independent who has access to erWIN.

Got it booked in for tomorrow. The garage I went to is usually pretty good but you’re right, second opinion needed I think.
