Hi all,

My first post here. I wanted to share my recent experience with the 15 Pro and want to figure out if it’s just me who feels like the screen is not that good compared to the older model. Let’s get straight to the point.

I upgraded from a iPhone 11 Pro to a iPhone 15 Pro on 12 nov 2023, but I immediately noticed the viewing angle is (perceived as) a step back compared to my 11 Pro. When you look straight at it, nothing is wrong with it. But when viewing in an angle, the 15’s seem to be dimmer than the 11 Pro. Also, there are slight hue/color variations. But that’s what’s to expect according to an Apple Employee I spoke about yesterday at the Apple Store, due to hardware variations by the different manufacturers they use for the screen.

See picture below.

Today I received my second 15 Pro so I can compare. But there’s no significant improvement compared to the the other 15 Pro I received earlier. So that makes me think, are my expectations too high or has anyone else noticed the same thing?

Test page: https://www.ledr.com/colours/white.htm

From left to right: 11 Pro, 15 Pro (received 15-11-2023), 15 Pro (received 12-11-2023)

From left to right: 11 Pro, 15 Pro (received 15-11-2023), 15 Pro (received 12-11-2023)

From top to bottom: 11 Pro, 15 Pro (received 15-11-2023), 15 Pro (received 12-11-2023)

Settings on each phone:

Display & Brightness:

  • Light Mode ON
  • True Tone OFF
  • Brightness 100%
  • Night Shift OFF

Accessibility > Display & Text-Size: (all off)

  • Reduce Transparency OFF
  • Increase Contrast OFF
  • Color Filters OFF
  • Auto-Brightness OFF
  • Reduce White Point OFF
  • Always On Display OFF

Also did a hard reboot/reset on all phones using volume up, volume down, holding power button until the device reboots and the Apple logo appears again. Funny enough, for both the 15’s that gave a little bump in brightness. Out of the box they are a little dim, even at 100% brightness.

This isn’t really anything new; this has always been the case with Apple.

There is nothing that you or Apple can do about the viewing angle, but as for the color temperature, there’s a lot that can be done; but Apple won’t let you.

If you ever used an Android; then for the most part you can adjust the color temperature to your preferences. Unfortunately you can’t do that with iOS.

I personally don’t really notice the difference, unless I compare the screens side to side. Usually I just get used to the screens color temperature; but some people just can’t.

I think the color temperature is the thing I don’t really worry about. Its all about the perceived brightness and viewing angle. I don’t really notice a bump in brightness to be honest, and I kinda have an eye for these things. The viewing angle is just bad, as shown at the images in my post.

I even tested the 15 Pro vs the 11 Pro today in full sun outside. I don’t really notice a difference. So it seems the brightness bump is probably only technical measurable, but not really perceived by human eyes.

But for all of this I expected a better (brighter) screen, with at least the same quality viewing angle, but i feel like i don’t have it right now.
