Lucid is a battery technology company masquerading as a car company. Their cars are basically tech demo for their battery tech. Lucid’s survival will depend on its ability to monetize the technology (like what they did with Formula E).

It’s more than just their batteries, their motors are much more compact and lightweight while still being able to compete with the Germans and Tesla in terms of power output. They’re also masters at vehicle packaging, and with the extraordinarily positive reception to the Sapphire they can also make a large heavy EV drive like the ICE champions in the sports sedan sector.

I do hope the company can survive to make vehicles in a class below the Air and Gravity, but even if they don’t that tech will be highly sought after by the legacy manufacturers and work its way into future cars regardless.

They’re also losing close to 200k per car. So it’s actually a 300k car that they discount to look like they have a technology edge.

That’s factually incorrect. They’re loosing around $15k a car without R&D cost as a per vehicle parts to build cost…

They’re loosing $200k a car when you blindly divide R&D costs + software development + initial investments + vehicle costs by the vehicles being sold…

I just don’t see a very big market for this vehicle, they really screwed up going sedan and not cross over. Lyriq on the lower side for a much better value, or Rivian R1S for not much more money.

As far as I can tell, everyone I know who got an EV for the 1st time - no matter the brand or model - loves it and says it’s the best car they’ve ever had (me included). EVs are just better. Once charging stations are more prevalent, it’s over for ICE.

Lucid is owned by the Saudi Sovereign wealth fund. The Saudi prince brutally dismembered the journalist Jamal Kashooghi. I wouldn’t drive that murder car if it was the last POS on the planet.

Their drivetrain tech is the best in the world but the interior and software experience just isn’t up to par for the price. I really wanted to like Lucid but I had to cancel my reservation because it just didn’t feel like a future-proof car. The screen being way too small to actually watch movies on makes any promise of future autonomy less appealing and the lack of a HUD is baffling at that price point. Couple that with a badly delayed and janky CarPlay integration and I just couldn’t dice roll at that price tag that the car might be what I want it to be someday.

Same here. Had a deposit from nearly day one. Had to cancel after seeing how half baked both the organization and the car software was when it came time to covert the deposit to an order. Maybe those things are better now >1y later… but now there’s even more competition coming in cheaper than they are. The Model S is that much cheaper and the Polestar 4 and ID.7 are coming around the corner.

For what they’re charging, they need to have their systems worked out basically perfectly. Especially for nav/route planning and media controls it should feel at least as good as the AAOS Google Maps and Spotify does on my Polestar 2, which is almost half the cost of the equivalently spec-ed Lucid.

Agree with everything you said. I was so excited for the test drive and was going to get one however in addition to the things you mentioned the ride was awful. Made me feel seasick! Basically a battery and computer (that doesn’t work great) on wheels.
