So I am checking out to get a Wallbox for our home.
I want to reduce electrical waste as good as possible, so I was thinking of buying it used.Thing is a am not sure about it, are they able to break? What should I look for? Can I test the function with a multimeter? All of the used wallboxes aren’t plugged in anymore so I can’t just try to charge my car with it.
What are your guys opinions of getting them used?
Ah and please no suggestions of which Wallbox is good or isn’t, I don’t want to have an advice of which to get, but rather if it can be an alternative getting them used. :)
Is the wallbox a smart charger? I get wallbox and one other charger mixed up between the two. I read a story on the evse sub reddit where someone bought a smart charger from eBay. They got it installed and working but then the manufacturer remotely shut down or locked the charger from working saying it was stolen
I bought second hand off eBay 6 months ago. No issues so far
I work in sustainability and have done a lot of work in electronics. I think electronics reuse is fine on the consumer electronics. But once you get to this level of power output the risk associated with fault goes up and you are taking more risk by using used.
Power electronics especially tend to have a life span as well. They heat cycle a lot more than other electronics. If you are concerned about electronic waste, I get it. But the circular economy is a huge myth and honestly, electronics recycling is better than most other streams so long as you take it to an electronics waste recycler directly and not try to send it through a MuRF.
It’s it a lot more risk? Probably not. But is it more? Yes.
I bought a used Clipper Creek Level 2 box on eBay more than 5 years ago. It has worked reliably for me. I see no reason to buy a replacement.
FYI “Wallbox” with a capital “W” is a brand of EVSE/charger. Collectively they are referred to EVSE, level 2 or sometimes AC charger. I actually purchased a refurbished Wallbox Pulsar Plus and its been great for going on two years now. Saved a nice bit off the prices too. So yes you can purchased used. For me it was a little bit of piece of mind to get a refurb from the manufacturer.
Sorry i didn’t knew that. In Germany the wall connector is called a wallbox, didn’t think it would have a different name in the US
No worries, just might confuse some folks when you ask for “Wallbox” recommendations :-)
