I had my Toyota at the dealership and they said the pads were due. I took the car to an independent mechanic and he said the pads were all good but the right rear wheel bearing was toast and it was.

I’d be pissed. yeah I couldn’t even bring my self to have them serves my vehicle while it’s under the warranty. 150 bucks for a oil change!?!?!? And it’s not even a mechanic that that does the oil changes anymore their porters. I’m good just updated it on the car fax report and keeping receipts. 25 dolors of supplies and 125dolor of labor? To a 17 year old kid getting payed 12 bucks a hr and it takes 30 min max? End rant

4mm of depth is the point you want to start thinking about replacement. Anything above that you are safe. As long as both inner and outer pad are the same too.

The rule of thumb is any less then the backplate is technically unsafe. Over time the pad material heats and cools over and over causing faults. When it thins it’s more likely to break or crack along the stress lines.

Is no one going to ask about the condition of the old rotor? Sure the pad looks decent, but maybe the old rotor was completely worn out?

I once went to the dealer for oil change and inspection when I got a call telling me they could not pass the inspection because the breaks were needed. I told them I needed a week to secure money to pay, and if they would give me a 10 days temporary inspection. It was bs but I did nit want to commit since I did not believe them. When I picked up the car, inspections was done, I didn’t say anything, paid and drove out. I drove with those brakes for 2 years, I never went back.
