I’ve seen these cars in person before at the Pebble Beach Concours and at the Monterey Historics. Pretty crazy that some of these are taken out and driven on the track!
It’s a bit of an open secret that these don’t really get raced. Some might, but it’s also common for sanctioning bodies to allow people to race a replica if they own the real car. (For example, that was the case with the 250 GTO that caught fire at Goodwood this year.)
These are insanely expensive replicas, built to a crazy-high standard, so they’re still cool to see on the track. Even so, it’s not quite the same as the real thing.
Although tbf. I don’t think it’s history makes it worth as kuch as these. I know someone with a 250gto that’s been raced in the last 2 decades on the original chassis.
I think a few original bits were resto modded slightly to preserve original bits and not need remanufactured parts and increase safety for rhe car. Example brakes. Collector has alot of his vintage all original cars besides a more modern brake upgrade sometimes suspension tweaks.
250gto that’s been in the family since they were worth not much. Benz sl300. F40 and f50 and a mclaren f1. Unfortunately the collector didn’t really expand into any of the cool hypercars and more exotic supercars after a certain point otherwise he’d probably have the coolest collection. I do know he tried to get the original veyron and couldn’t along with a Pagani pre zonda car and a first gen zonda and that seems to have like ended his quest. Newest supercars in the collection are lambos and basic ferraris. However his porsche collection and Benz and BMW collections have expanded. 60s 70s and 80s cars are the average. Some 90s stuff.
Ironically my favorite is still the Diablo with the 300zx headlights. Or his replica Shelby cobra unless we count something he has that shouldn’t technically exist. Pontiac gto but somehow has the 500 ram air 5 big block engine from the 60s. And used to be a proper drag car. Cobra replica has a replica Ford cammer now but started out as a replica cobra motor.
But gto is probably one of a handful. Silly rare and under appreciated market value. But like a true nerd piece. Also not the lame ugly green like my gto.
All garage queens hell drive but like. Too many cars to give them all proper attention. And lately he’s been going classy or just driving my gto around for me so the restomod swap doesn’t get mangled. Let’s just say insurance doesn’t like me…and I can understand why. Destroked ls7 making 700rwhp. And I’ve removed 1000lbs of weight off my judge. And it’s twincharged. Like a 16 to 18 year old tryna insure a demon but worth almost a lambo.
But if my business plans work out. Building 3 cars that’ll be 1200kg fully wet weight with 1200rwhp and rev to 10k. Mine as the first. Then 2 for this dude his and his sons and his collection will get something cool post 2005. Literally post 2005 its lambos and Benz beamers or Bentleys or his wife’s rolls and his daughters mclaren. Not getting those few cars like killed his obsession. Funniest thing I’ve seen like rich dudes so depressed he couldn’t spec them how he wanted he just gave up on cars. That sounds more like me then a dude making hundreds of mills a year xD
i was just at the velocity invitational. it was crazy to see a 250 gto, 250 gt swb berlinetta, and a 250 lm berlinetta gt and a 250 lm all get flogged around the track. and watching the racing come within inches sometimes.
