Nothing to say, i just love it
I recommend not installing anything unless you need it, especially window management and customization tools. I like MacOS because it’s simple and clean. Use it for a few weeks, get the hang of it and only then, if you need it, install utilities.
Plus how can we recommend anything if we don’t know what you need and what you like? What a weird request.
OP for the love all man kind, don’t listen to a single person here telling you to install these silly utility tools that make a Mac run more like Windows. Don’t get Alfred, or Bartender or apps that give you the “Windows” experience of split screens. It’s all nonsense. Your Mac does everything those apps do. You really should take the time and discover what it does instead of instantly installing a lot of BS. Then you’ll see why Apple puts so much time into the Mac and MacOS. You’d be surprised everything it’s capable of.
The Mac comes with a very good office suite but if you need MS Office then get that. It also has a very good photo editing suit but if you need something more get Pixelmator or PS. If you need to do video editing it does include iMovie but if you need more then install Apple’s Final Cut Pro X or Adobe Premiere.
If you want the best adblocker then get WIPR. It’s ~$2 USD and it’s absolutely the most powerful. It can’t get everything but it’s better than the other free ones.
For the love all man kind, Alfred and bartender have absolutely nothing to do with “the windows experience”. They’re great apps
I fucking despise windows but Mac full screen/Desktop/split screening still needs an overhaul, it’s super clunky compared to windows.
It’s funny because I love the Mac full-screening experience. I love independently being able to 3 finger swipe left / right on any monitor and have multiple displays within displays. I’ve tried to find something similar when I have to use Windows and haven’t succeeded.
Definitely Arc for a browser
Daisy disk, parallels, fermatta, Alfred, istats, pixelmator pro (I like it better than photoshop)
Raycast is better than Alfred, Affinity is better than Pixelmator. Both are better by a lot.
Also, bartender is great and Xnip is amazing.
I like Affinity, but on the go I like pixelmator because of how black and white it is, super simple - but yes, Affinity is great too - I haven’t used bartender in ages and I have heard of Xnip
Can parallels use GPU cores yet? For me it’s pretty useless otherwise.
I’m not sure, I know the Mx series ones are optimized to use the Apple silicon and they can handle some gaming but not sure how well it uses the GPU
It could since 2021 I thought. I used to play overwatch on a windows 10 virtual machine on my M1 Max
I love iStats!
iStats only have intel version tho, is there an arm upgrade on the way?
It worked fine on my M1 and it works fine on my M3, but the sensor reading functionality on the M3 is only picking up on the SSD temperature sensor, unlike the M1 which had CPU and a plethora of other sensor monitoring working.
What is the point of Alfred and how is it better than the default spotlight?
Alfred searches your files, iCloud, local HDD the web and everything else you can think of, spotlight is limited, and Alfred is customizable and faster
There is also another alternative to Alfred - Raycast
+1 for Raycast
Alfred user for ~10 years. Raycast for 1, and love it. 5x better.
In Alfred, I can search files so quickly by double tapping space bar and then use shift to quick look it. Is it possible to get the same reaction on Raycast?
In some way. I have option - f, or alias fs for file search. Then default action is to open, but you could CMD + Y to quick look.
Ooooooo…. I’ll have to check that out
What does daisy disk do
Micro analyzes your HDD and other drives connected and lets you dig in and clean up storage
I’ve been using “clean my Mac” for years now and daisydisk seems like a major improvement. I’ll definitely give it a shot.
Parallels (coherence is great for that seamless feel as if they were native Mac apps), istats (I mainly use it’d orbiter network monitor), bartender (declutter and have more space in the status bar), better touch tool (I use a Touch Bar MacBook, so that’s what I initially used it for, but it has since replaced a couple of other tools I previously used, you can customize touchpad gestures, keyboard shortcuts, and also includes windows snapping), aldente (to set max charge on and to help keep battery capacity longer, also Black Friday is coming up, and the dev has a history of offering a sale during this time, it’s usually the only time it gets discounted per year).
Move the dock to the left thank. Me. Later
Depends on the monitor resolution, scale and personal preference. For a wide/ultrawide/super-ultrawide monitor, makes sense to have the dock at the bottom.
I started on an ultra wide and never looked back… Even as a laptop the real estate you get is amazing… It takes just too much space and it decreases scrolling by a lot… Again I think people should give it a try especially if they are new to mac
That would totally screw me over with my browser having all the tabs on the left.
Yes! Thank you
Good looking mac
Whatever you need the MacBook for
I just bought mbp with apple care + till 26 , is there any way to make sure battery goes below 80% health before warranty expires
Rectangle for window management App cleaner for comprehensive app removal Rocket for Slack style emoji support
Someone has already linked to some of his videos, but Quinn’s SnazzLabs youtube channel is great.
I like to keep my Mac as default as possible, generally, though I use BetterSnapTool (for window snapping), and iStat monitor so I can see CPU/memory in my taskbar.
I would personally subscribe to Set App. You get Clean My Mac X which is EASILY worth the sub alone. Plus you get to try a ton of apps for many situations that crop up. I would definitely recommend it, at least for a month to see what you may need. I use the absolute crap out of it.
Windows
I personally migrated from Linux to macOS and love my little creature comforts so:
- Homebrew
- Yabai
- skhd
- Sketchybar
