So I am obviously the odd man out here. I love a Manual, the engagement and all. I drive a 2001 GT3 Cup car in HSR, which is a 6 speed. It requires focus and consistency. I also have a 2018 GT3 road car with PDK, I do Local PCA events, not live racing, but Ill tell you, it is so much more pleasurable and easy to go fast. Weather it is manual paddle shifting or fully automatic. I am pretty solid with the manual. If I was racing myself with a PDK, over several laps. The PDK would smoke the manual every time. Somehow we have convinced ourselves that Automatics are for pansies. Nope Modern Autos, like the Porsche PDKs are for fast drivers, period. The ability to focus on the line and the competition so intently, without having to worry about blowing it up with a 5 to 2 shift at the end of the back stretch at VIR, or a 1-4 and losing momentum coming out of Oak Tree into the back stretch is so much better. Give me PDK for serious driving every time. Heck give me PDK for around town. Let the engine sounds take you to another world!
Can I get the link for that knob
Manual : i like to go on lower gears on some corners for better power delivery
BMW manuals aren’t very good but their DCT is one of the best in the industry.
Debating this myself right now in terms of an M3. Do I want manual for the fun factor of daily driving (not much highway) vs the additional acceleration of the competition (not to mention price). Not going to track a 80-100k car and destroy it so that’s a non factor.
Manual, I like having full control over my car. I find autos to be annoying and less responsive.
Well, my most recent experience was a 2017 Audi Q3 and a 2023 KIA Piccanto. I know the Audi is a good car. But I personally disliked driving both equally.
Paddle shifts are a blast.
Then when I’m done with that, I hand shifting back over to the ZF transmission.
auto for day to day drive, manual for fun.
For long cruises auto. For fun driving and twisty roads manual. But if I had to pick one. Manual.
Manual. No idea why I prefer it, but I’m nervous for what I’ll get after my F32 needs replaced. Two doors, manual, and X Drive with the N55 has been a phenomenal combination for me. I don’t know of anything new that scratches the same itch
If I chose to daily one, then definitely auto. But if it was my fun car, then manual.
Manual. Makes driving fun in every way. I dont mind traffic or hills at all with hill hold on my manual F82. I daily it and never thought once that I wish I got the DCT.
But autos are def faster and more convenient. I like the manual also bc it forces you to pay attention while driving, so it keeps me more alert. In autos on long drives, id find myself feeling sleepy very quickly lol.
Yeah they are faster about 0.1sec diff not an issue
Would you want an automatic McLaren F1?
We all know the answer!
I’ve never owned a manual with much power so I have an honest question since manuals seem to cap out at 6 gears.
Can you cruise at highway speeds doing say 90mph and where are the rpm’s usually at? I’m used to highway cruising speeds of 85+ mph and wonder if “cruising” at those speeds will have some cars overtaxed at high rpm’s. Debating going back to a stick because of that.
Grew up with manual and always driven them, so for most cars I would pick manual any day. Love me a DSG in fire and forget mode though.
Early autos have always left a bad taste in my mouth but from the very odd occasion I need to drive a modern auto, I don’t actually mind them too much beyond the constant urge to move my left foot and arm.
