Hello everyone, I’ve just bought a condo and I’m trying to figure out how this thing is wired up. They had a coax going from the wall to a power inserter to a splitter to the modem. I put my modem in there and that seemed to work alright (~200 mbps, but it did cut out about once per hour…which is worrying). I thought the splitter was just there to accommodate direct linking his TV in addition to his modem so I removed it. I tried also removing the power inserter but the modem didn’t function without it. This morning, it was only running at 6 mbps and now it seems to be not functioning at all.

  1. Am I frying the modem somehow? Was the splitter in place to attenuate the signal or something?

  2. I see that the power inserter is supposed to provide power over the coax. Does that mean there’s an amp somewhere? I looked around but couldn’t find it.

  3. What the fuck is going on here?

Redundant questions I know. Anyone know what’s going on?

There would seem to be an amplifier somewhere in the coax line. Maybe the amp is located outside where the coax comes into the residence. This is an old-school method of signal distribution used in many apartment buildings. If you are only using the one wall outlet for the modem, then you may be able to remove the amp and the below CMCDT to direct connect the cable to the modem.

The CMCDT takes signal in and passes thru the majority of the power to feed another outlet(s), while dropping a signal to the outlet. Look for other wall outlets and see if they also use the same device.
