For me, it has to be “souls like”. I don’t get much time to game so when I do, I want linear stories that are challenging but not to the extent that I can’t move forward without dying 100 times.
Also, sims that encourage a lot of DLC purchases - I’m an old school gamer and games used to come with all of the content - for one price. Now it’s just a given we have to hand over more money for half the game content.
Soulslike - I don’t think my reflexes are good enough for incredibly difficult boss fights
Roguelike - I don’t really know what it is but it seems to involve a lot of repetition and doesn’t appeal to me. Open to my mind being changed by the right game but nothing has persuaded me yet
Roguelite - see above
FPS - was never good at them even in the original Doom days and just couldn’t get into them in any generation. Goldeneye, Halo, COD, just never got into them.
Whatever genre all those shitty NES-graphics overhead shooters are… I think of them as “_______ Survivor” because Vampire Survivor is the most successful example I know of
RTS - possibly related to the FPS thing, war games just never really did it for me
RTS RPGs - the worst part of RPGs is turn based battles, so this I would never
Card battlers - this applies to any game where the gameplay is based around cards, I think. Not very into card games in real life, even less so in videogames
Tower defence - basically RTS
Pretty much shooters, but only on Steam Deck because I don’t like playing shooters on a handheld.
Besides Unit 13 on PS Vita. That game is good on handheld.
RTS. Just not my type of game.
Souls like, mobas, rts and hard pixel platformers.
Metroidvania, souls like, rogue-anything = I’m out
I tend to avoid sports sims, like Madden, NBA, etc. I grew up playing every major sport until I graduated from college, they just aren’t that fun for me. I get bored after the first half of most games, unless it’s NHL. I just wish they release NHL on PC again, I’d play that one.
Same - it was a sad day when I realized this
Yeah, I hate Soul like games too. I just don’t understand them.
Also hate all battle royale games.
Early access. The worst genre ever.
Roguelike games, i genuinely tried to enjoy them but it doesnt feel fun for me to do the same thing alot cause i dont feel like im making alot of progress i did enjoy deadcells a little bit but i couldnt enjoy games like slay the spire or vampire survivors
Souls-likes, competitive multi-player games, sandboxes, and roguelikes/lites.
I love from soft games but I hate any “souls like” games that aren’t made by from. I feel like they can’t capture the same magic.
But puzzle games are what I avoid the most. I just don’t think puzzles are fun
FPS shooters. I am not very good at them. I have some, I don’t play them much and anything with micro transactions.
JRPGs. I don’t usually like turn based combat, and I also don’t like when games spend LOADS of time on story sequences. A friend of mine recently convinced me to try Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep and it drove me up the wall that the first 10-15 minutes of the game only contained like 2 minutes of gameplay.
I’ll make exceptions on occasion, but the story and combat both have to be absolutely phenomenal for me to give it a fair shake.
