There are plenty of referees who are as good at their job as they can be expected to be. As long as it’s perfectly accepted for players to actively try to deceive the referee, referees shouldn’t be judged for making wrong calls no matter how blatant they are.
No excuse for getting VAR calls wrong, though.

I feel Michael Oliver is consistently good. The times that Lee Mason refereed Villa games he did a decent job then.
I can’t remember all the refs names, but in general I think the standard pf refereeing in both the Premier League, Championship and La Liga is pretty decent.

Haven’t seen his name pop up but Ken Aston deserves a mention. He developed the yellow and red card system
If you can remember a ref, 90% of the time that means he wasn’t good
