I just bought a 77” Sony A80L and Im wondering if the Apple 4K Tv device is necessary to improve anything?

Yes, buy one, buy the 128GB one as it has gigabit ethernet port. I always used smart TV apps until I cut the cord and went to fiber network with youtube TV. My smart tv doesn’t support youtube TV so I purchase an Apple TV 4k 128GB. Man, what a difference! No more fighting with buggy, slow apps. Pictures and sound are so much better! Now I am looking to upgrade my audio receiver and speakers so I can HDMI Apple TV 4k -> AVR -> TV instead current Apple TV 4k -> TV -> AR.

This is the way. I hate smart tvs, I always use a separate box to make it smart. I’m my case Apple TVs.

Yup, samsung smart tv is intrusive garbage. It’s the perfect example of “asshole design”.

Samsung literally force plays trashy reality tv shows when you turn it on. Previously I was able to disable this. It was not easy to disable though and required online tutorials, no accident on Samsungs part I’m sure. They just updated something though and it now seems impossible to disable their trashy tv shows.

So I reset the TV, declined the TOS, didn’t allow it to connect to wifi, and got an Apple TV box that will do everything.

        Hey Samsung, fuck you.

Oh you’re one of those. How brave. What an inspiration you are. It’s all a conspiracy and Samsung definitely cares what reality TV you’re watching. 🤦🏼‍♂️🤦🏼‍♂️

I have a Sony x90l and an Apple TV 4K. I’ve used both internal apps and the Apple TV. You’ll see very little difference in picture quality and the internal apps have the advantage of being able to set different picture modes for each of them if you want.

I use my Apple TV exclusively now over the internal apps because I have young children and I was shocked at some of the ads that the Google tv interface pushed through. My kids definitely would have had nightmares with some of the horror movie stills they used to advertise a movie. The ad free interface of the Apple TV made it worth it to not have to worry about what would greet my kids when I booted up the tv. If I had no kids or my kids were older, I’d be happy with the built in apps.

Absolutely 100% NO!!! Waste of time and money…your tv UI is sufficient. But if you want to go down that route that’s ok…but it will not necessarily improve anything much at this stage. Maybe in a couple of years of TV ownership.

You don’t need it! But it does so many things well! When I first saw the price I thought it was dumb and I’d just get a cheaper box or stick but they way it cleans up everything in terms of what you want to watch, the setting which basically updates resolution and external sound. It’s just awesome. I have a Sony x90L but the first version of Apple TV 4K. Amazing how much faster the newer ones are so it’s definitely time for an UPGRADE! My advice, get one from somewhere like Costco with a long return policy. (I’ve done that on almost every Apple product I have and never taken any back lol. Also if you’re new to the platform try this video, it gives some essential power user pro tips!

I bought one for the 2 year old Sony Bravia in my living room, but found the internal apps work well enough (including Plex) that I moved the ATV to a Pioneer Elite in my bedroom that is 1080.

I use ATV with Samsungs due to their terrible interface. I prefer to utilize Sony’s XR processor and Google TV - great upscaling quality, same mirroring/airplay capabilities as ATV. Also, Sony’s backlit remote is truly great with direct buttons to Netflix, Disney, etc.
