Dear fellow SD users,

A trivial, point-blank question. Are you going to upgrade?

As I have the (former) top-of-the-line and non-modded model, I wonder if the improvements of the OLED version justify the price. I believe they do, especially in the long run. What’s your take? Will you hold on what you have or bite the bullet?

Thanks for your replies :)

VERY VERY Tempted to upgrade and I’d say 75% likely that I will. The better screen and battery life really are the main two things I’d wished were better on the original (I have the OG 512 model as well). I use my Deck almost every day and having those improvements would really make an appreciable difference for me.

I only just bought mine about a month and a half ago, so as disappointed as I am in my timing, I won’t be upgrading until this one starts dying on me.

I’ll wait until Steam Deck 2, just like I’m waiting for Switch 2. My LED one works perfectly fine.

My guess is this refresh gives them capital for steam deck 2. More than happy to support valve. One of the only companies I consider a “stand up” company.

I want the oled so bad… but I barely get time to play the one I have… can’t justify it :(

The reason I want the OLED is not for the better screen or even the better battery life. It’s because of the better Bluetooth and Wi-Fi chips. Which, for me, has been the worst part of the LCD deck. I’ve had controllers randomly disconnect while docked and problems connecting multiple controllers. I’ve experienced connection issues with my home wifi as well where every other device I own works fine with it. I don’t know if it’s just a problem with my specific steam deck or what, but I have heard of a few people having similar issues with their decks and I rather just buy and own the better device. Even better, the new deck can be woken up by Bluetooth controllers when sleeping, which improves the docked experience. Of course, I will wait to hear people’s impressions when it releases first before buying myself.

not likely to upgrade at the moment, but i couldn’t be happier that they’ve released this refresh. valve are great at proof-reading their homework before turning it in; they know that there are still a lot of people yet to buy a SD who are likely to do so now they’ve sweetened the deal. according to the replies on this, there’s a fair few happy to buy a new one and sell on their current model (establishing a strong second hand market is a big plus).

valve also loves to trial certain tech before they really figure out how to use it; the steam controller pads weren’t quite the huge revelation they might’ve hoped for, but they led us to incredible touchpad implementation on SD with accompanying software support. imo, including an oled screen on this model all but guarantees the implementation on SD2 will be even better :)
