I am looking to get the new Steam Deck to finally get onboard with PC gaming, coming from a console gaming background. In fact, I have never gamed on PC before.

I was very close to pulling the trigger until I found out there is an issue with the Steam Deck playing online if the game is going through the proton layer.

I have seen reports, such as Destiny 2, that won’t support Steam OS players and will ban you if you brute force it. I also saw other companies could ban players using Steam Deck’s Steam OS, mostly coming from big online games due to anti-cheat measures.

I wonder if this situation is universal for all games that are online, or if it’s more of an issue for big or AAA online games. What if I play an indie online game? Do they also usually enforce these rules?

If the majority of online games are not playable on the Steam Deck, it could be a dealbreaker for me as I wanted to get onboard with PC gaming for this specific reason.

The games i have played online is star wars the old republic, world of warcraft, final fantasy 14 and war thunder. All multiplayer parts of the games works great. Mmo’s are great to play on steam deck. War thunders controller (tanks) didnt feel great so i uninstalled.

It depends on the specific game. Destiny 2? Anticheat blocks linux just to be jerks, the anticheat software they use works on linux with nothing more than flipping a toggle and the google stadia version of the game ran on linux and had this anticheat too, so they already did it once. Halo MCC? Anticheat works fine. Apex? Works fine as long as EA hasn’t broken their launcher again. Overwatch 2? Works fine. Call of Duty? Doesn’t work fine.

Thanks for the info. In fact, other than destiny which I am kind of curious about. I have no interests in any other big titles. I am mostly thinking about indie or mid tier co-op games that I can play with friends for fun. Monster hunter type of experiences if you will.
