I’m fed up trying to talk about privacy to my friends! Every time I start to talk about privacy they go “Are you a terrorist!” , “What are you hiding?” , “Are you a pimp”. This has happened way so many times that I gave up trying to talk privacy entirely to my friends. But, privacy is one of my main interests, it’s kind of like my hobby. One of the few things that I like and am passionate about is privacy. Since I didn’t have a social group to talk about privacy I created one on Matrix! I created a Matrix space called “Intimadad Amigos” (means ‘privacy friends’ in Spanish- And, nope! Before anyone asks I’m not Spanish. I was looking for a name for the space and thought this one was cool). Here you can talk about all things privacy such as civil liberties, OpSec, Netsec, politics and philosophies involving privacy without exposing your real identity with like minded people. I’m pretty sure many would have faced this where they can’t freely discuss privacy without getting put down or getting nagged with unending questions about whether they are a terrorist. So I hope this space will be beneficial to you. Feel free to join and grab your like-minded friends along with you! Happy socializing!

What kind of friends do you have? I was able to explain my decision for privacy to my friends and they understood my choice. They still don’t care them self but no one is calling me weird names. They fully understand me. They are just to lazy to give up the luxury from google etc.
But maybe that’s because I’m from Germany. Here the concept of privacy is something most people like, at least in real life and in untechnical situations. I think they just don’t understand enough about tech to understand that it pretty much has the same importance as the Real Life when it comes to maintaining your privacy.
Anyways. I will probably join.
Edit: Link is not working.

My experience from interacting with Germans is that you are above-average privacy conscious, which I find very admirable and gives me some level of hope that it is possible to gain some general awareness on these topics also in my country and elsewhere. Why do you think it is so?

I too observed the same after reading numerous comments and posts from EU residents in Reddit and the like. I think this has to do with strict Data privacy laws there and it’s propagated in various forms of media so even the average consumer knows about it.

I think for this to happen stricter data privacy laws should be adapted by countries and should be advertised so hard that even your grandma knows about it. This is the only way we can normalise conversations about privacy.

Sorry! I’m still new to Matrix so I’m still figuring out stuff. I’ll check what to do and post the new link here.

Yeah, being from the EU might be helpful to you since more people are aware of the importance of data privacy thanks to laws like GDPR. But where I live the concept of privacy is alien. Privacy is taboo here and trying to achieve physical privacy itself will be frustrating don’t even get me started on the digital side.
uhm actually the name means “intimacy friends” 🤓
I could use a few of those too tbh.

Sorry! I’m not native Spanish. And, by the way the link now works! Please join and bring along your privacy-loving friends!
None of my friends in the United States would say such things either. Must be some really whack friends.

Hi! You’re using fluffy chat right? In fluffy chat you have to click the “Discover” option and then paste the link to my space: !WWreQNpCubYEuZnMxI:matrix.org

Thanks. I joined. I think there might be an issue with the client now, but the link worked.
I followed the prompt for the encryption upgrade and that failed.
You’re using Element right? Yeah, the app has been icky for the past couple days.
That I am. I’ve been fucking around with it for a couple of hours now and I just can’t figure out why it’s not working. I’m pretty convinced that it’s not me though. I tried using the fluffy app as well but I couldn’t get that to work quite right either. I’m starting to wonder if there isn’t something going on with Android 14 that’s causing the issue but I really don’t know.
Nope, doesn’t work?
Not for me or that other person. I dunno dude. I never used matrix before though so perhaps I’m clicking the link wrong or something crazy.
Mate is clicking the link in the wrong angle.
Maybe? Edit: removed unintentional redundancy
Yea I posted the same screenshot already.
