I can’t really think of any team that has an all black home kit. Is there a rule that prevents clubs from doing this?
For England there were some mainly black kits around the formation of clubs (Bristol Rovers were all black with a yellow sash) but until around 1993 you couldn’t have a black kit (home or away). Manchester United’s 1993/94 away kit was lauded at the time as the first “black” kit (although Wimbledon played in a very dark blue around then).
I don’t think, in the modern era, there has been an all black home kit in the PL/EFL unless it’s a commemorative effort.
Because for many years referees only wore all black. Many competitions did prohibit wearing black, as it was reserved for the referees. They only started wearing other colours in the 90s.
Hmmm, refs used to wear red when Scotland played in navy.
Also hard for me to find a combo of black shirt and white shorts. The opposite is popular, like for the German national team. But black top white bottom is rare.
AIK in Sweden.
yes because they were only formed 9 years ago. refs had to wear all black pre 00s
+1 LAFC wears black for home matches.
Great historic club
All the great memories with Bale, Chiellini, Vela, um… Baird?
Historically refs wear black and even today in non league in England teams can’t wear all black. Clubs are built on history and if they didn’t have all black then, they wouldn’t now.
“home kit”
Orlando pirate has a black kit
I Could be wrong, but weren’t all the old ref uniforms all black?
Indeed… hence the chant of “who’s the wanker in the black?” that would ring out from stadiums everywhere.
Celtic have an all black away kit
“home kit”
There used to be a rule that said you couldn’t play in black as black was reserved for the referees. It’s why New Zealand play in all white, when they wear all black in most other sports. I believe the rule no longer applies but most home kit colours were established whilst the rule was still in place
Spurs have had all black before.
Academica de Coimbra, Academico de Viseu to name two portuguese ones.
Birmingham Legion has one.
LOL. I read this and thought, I know of at least one team with all black…
Turns out there are a bunch.
Kit colours for clubs in established leagues would have been chosen and set 100 odd years ago, in the days when refs wore one colour and clubs would travel with one kit (and hope there hadn’t been a mixup on telegram).
Away kit colours change a lot, home kits rarely do. Plus there are third kits now so if all black wasn’t suitable they can wear that.
