There’s more attacking midfielders at the club then there has been in a while, but none of them fit the one midfield role we need. Kind of crazy that aside from Rice, we really don’t have a box to box profile at the club that can even remotely replicate things Xhaka did.
Even in the League cup, Jorge and Zina can’t play together.
The solution is pretty obvious - it’s just that Partey is unfortunately injured.
Who could have seen that coming!
It’s mad that after recruitment that appeared designed specifically to address this, Partey is still this hinge point in the team.
I guess now we know even more what Mikel meant when he called Thomas ‘a super important player for us and for me’ in the summer, in the interview where he rubbished the transfer rumours as ‘nothing there’.
Last season we would not be where we are without Partey. The dropoff from Partey to this season’s Jorgingo is massive, though, so we look vulnerable without Rice and Partey in the team. At least now we have a like for like replacement.
They’re not really like for like. Partey definitely gives us something different there. Our vertical progression with Rice on the pitch is noticeable worse.
Not that Rice is a worse player - but Rice is an excellent 8.
I meant that they are close to the same quality, so results haven’t suffered in Partey’s absence. Didn’t mean to say they share the same qualities across the board, rather, they are both level raisers.
Jorge has his flaws, and those flaws are really highlighted when he is paired with Zina. He’s 31 and third choice, expecting him to do what Partey and Rice can isn’t reasonable. The lineup and tactics should reflect that, to the extent possible.
