If you want a good, privacy respecting alternative to discord that’s a bit more normie friendly than a Matrix client and your friends are willing to move to it, check out Stoat. Still do sensitive shit over Matrix though.

Right but, it certainly doesn’t have age verification right now. Trying to eternally escape enshittification in a bourgeois society that is literally enshittifying itself into catastrophe within the next 20-30 years is a fruitless endeavor. As of this very moment, Stoat is undeniably a better choice than Discord, although not perfect. It is also more user friendly for people who aren’t super aware of this stuff than alternatives like Matrix or SimpleX. Obviously still use those for activities where OPSEC matters.
Besides, it’s FLOSS, and can be self-hosted, the default file size limit is literally set by the config file. Only usages supported by the Stoat team’s servers (i.e. not self hosted) have 20MiB enforced. If it makes any wild decisions it’s millions of users don’t like, it can be forked and made irrelevant.

AFAIK they’ve been planning to add e2ee to Stoat for a good while now. Still no clue about how much progress the’ve made though.
To my knowledge it still isn’t added but it’d still be an easier pill to swallow for moving your DMs and groupchats to.
At least from my experience with Matrix clients, your average Discord user is gonna absolutely hate trying to use Matrix. Dealing with encryption keys, identity resets, and the inability to easily sign into your account on multiple devices is a pain in the ass, just absolutely worth it for the added security and privacy. The average Discord user won’t see it that way unfortunately. Stoat mimics enough of Discord’s environment and is more convenient than Matrix for most users, while also being much more private and self-hostable e2ee notwithstanding. Would love to actually see it implemented though.
