People who still use both Reddit and Lemmy and are slowly leaving Reddit. How do you do it?
I have noticed that I’m very often on Reddit through either Apollo or the website out of mere habit (possibly even addiction). However, I have also noticed that the more I use Reddit, the more I feel agitated by all the negativity and toxicity from the users.
This is pretty much in all subreddits I’m active in. Mostly in piracy and piratedgames, people quarrel over the most trivial things and downvote each other for no reason at all.
Unfortunately, Lemmy has less content than Reddit. Though, I can’t call what is on Reddit content anymore.
Lemmy/Piefed is for when I want a more slower and easier processed experience.
Reddit is for when I want a more broadened approach because of how much is there.
I recently discovered I’ve been shadowbanned, with zero idea why. Appeals vanish into the void without an answer… So I can read, but not participate. Feels pretty hostile towards users. Maybe they’re doing me a favor?
There are still niche communities there that don’t exist here.
I still also browse Reddit some but I’ve been using it a lot less since they banned me and cut off old.reddit
I keep my feeds on the app very curated which helps a lot. There are some niche subs that I like to visit still that don’t have a presence on here.
By replacing reddit shortcut with Lemmy shortcut on my front page/screen. Muscle memory is helluva drug

After getting banned for saying it’s ok to punch nazis in the face. 12 year account I just stopped cold turkey. I refuse to even click reddit links.

I came here during the API change drama. Started to get acquainted with the platform before Apollo stopped working. And when it did, I never came back. Didn’t even bother deleting my few hundred comments or give them the chance to ban me for not being a nazi propagandist cunt.

I have been opening Lemmy for about two months now, browsing the communities and reading users’ comments, and yesterday I decided to create an account.
Honestly, as someone who has only been on Reddit since 2018, I am curious to know what Reddit looked like in its early years, and Lemmy is a really good opportunity for that.
The content is limited? One day Reddit’s content was limited too and then it grew! + Platforms and communities don’t grow on their own. they grow because of the people in them.
Yeah, I get you. When I first came here exclusively I was looking for the same dopamine as I was getting from reddit. After, I’m not looking this up, the whistleblower from Facebook talked about anxiety being a better algorithm driver to keep people engaged longer, (?) I don’t wonder how many other platforms like reddit, use algorithms to cause addiction. Maybe the answer is breaking the addiction and then coming back at it, on your own terms. I feel like I’ve broken the addiction. I am able to put Lemmy down. I don’t feel like I’m stuck. I did struggle at first because my brain was in the habit of drawing that dopamine in that way, I redirected it to a specialised interest. And leaned into some psychology tricks for manual reset hacking the body, to reduce my anxiety. I like this side where I don’t feel that addiction any more. I feel more present in my life now. I read lemmy for half an hour a day with my coffee in the morning or in a doctors office if I’m waiting for a while and such. That dopamine is out there in different ways.
I only use Reddit on rare occasions and I add friction to remind myself not to use it. I have a Lemmy app on my phone. I do not have a reddit app on my phone. The mobile site is pretty unusable, so I end up using old Reddit on desktop. I have leechblock installed so it asks me “Do you want to compromise your principles and ethics?” every time I navigate to something in the reddit domain.
I started when the API thing went down… exploring other sites with Lemmy among them. After continued enshitification I slowly started manually deleting 13 years of posts. Some here, some there. When I ran out of posts to delete I killed my account and just would occasionally browse old reddit. Now after they killed old reddit without logging in. (Which I will not do again). That was it. You get way better conversations here with mostly real people … Honestly feels like the old days of reddit. I’ve had to find other places for niche forums and stuff for my hobbies but I’d rather do that then to go back to that shit pile.
Lemmy definately has less content, but it feels like the old internet. People are just friendlier here. My biggest recommendation is to post/comment a lot; I think things like that really help the platform grow. I can honestly say I’ve never received any negative feedback here, so its a pretty safe space.
My experience has been very different, especially yesterday. My reddit account had plenty of trolls on the blocklist, but I encountered an individual here who made several snap judgments about me based on an innocent response to a question and then demanded an apology from me for their hurt feelings when I said nothing targeted at anyone and they initially inserted themselves with arrogance and vitriol.
As well, if you’re not full on tankie/anarchist or at least more than halfway to either one, prepare for people to take issue with your stances. Vehemently. As if you were personally attacking them for having the audacity to, you know, be an individual.
However I still prefer this experience to whatever it is Reddit has become and agree with your suggestions for how to make it more engaging.
Every place has assholes, there are fewer on Lemmy. Block and move on.

Everyone romanticizes the “old” Reddit and the old internet quite a bit. There were always trolls, fake accounts, a holes and whiny jerks. The ads, bots, and all the more recent issues just tipped reddit over the edge.
I felt bad leaving a 15 year old account but it wasn’t hard. I hadn’t enjoyed Reddit in a while. I uninstalled the client and installed mlem. It also helped me to temporarily switch browsers so I’m not getting Reddit threads as part of the search results. If I want Reddit in my search results then I will look for that intentionally.

Its people that fuck things up, broadly speaking. I don’t particularly love people, but humans are alright in my book. Unfortunately, people are everywhere.
To define terms a little more clearly, humans recognize things like “the other human” and “do unto others” and such. People, broadly, are greedy selfish creatures that will step on your feet without a second glance but be utterly appalled should anybody have the unmitigated gall to treat them in kind.
These definitions transcend all political divisions and ideologies and belief systems, for the record. I have known some lovely religious conservative humans and some genuinely awful and repulsive progressively-minded people.
I always try to be a human. Emphasis on try, as people make it difficult sometimes.

Ahh yes, tankies and anarchists, famously the only political ideologies that “take issue with your stances.”
This is totally an echo chamber. Just look around. Its part of what drew us all here at the end of the day.
And for the record, I prefer that flavor of madness over whatever the US is voting in around the country right now, so maybe take my observations as nothing more or less than just that - observations.
Not saying we in the united States aren’t to blame for a lot of what’s going on but its starting to become global. Migration/race issues are becoming hot everywhere and at the same time everyone is rushing in the new era of survalience on the level, or surpassing that of 1984.
I always used to imagine that I could just flee my country when things got too bad, but increasingly it seems like its spreading every where.

I’d wanna be south of the arctic circle, though. I need something resembling seasons and am absolutely certain I would go genuinely insane with six month intervals of night and day. As long as those conditions are met, I’m down with that too.
I also read somewhere that Britons might wanna consider starting vineyards as the climate there is likely to become more Mediterranean. Also something to consider.
