Pretty much the title. I’ve seen plenty of people using proxmox and truenas but I don’t really see many homelab users running Ubuntu server or something similar? Do many people actually use it to run docker or any containers on their machines? Just curious.
I run Debian on bare metal as my docker host.
Ubuntu is my OS of choice for docker hosting.
i’m using ubuntu server directly, no hypervisor, for my homelab
I run Ubuntu both in my homelab and in my development environments for work. Out of habit, mostly.
I do on bare metal and it is rock solid.
We run it a work, so I run it at home as a vm
Got a physical Ubuntu server for my Plex and a Ubuntu server VM for docker.
I do. Multiple. For scaling practice to 100 ip VPN farm. Scraping. Nas. List goes on.
Loads of us run Ubuntu VMs on Proxmox.
There’s dozens of us! Dozens!
I run them on ESXi but same type of thing
-1. Debian user.
Well, that makes four of us. 😆
What? That’s five of us.
This is the way
Me too, on proxmox.
This is the answer
Ubuntu server on ESXi VMs
Xubuntu on laptopProbably there is some people here running VMs with Ubuntu Server in their Proxmox machines.
Debian all the way here.
I’ve run both, and I prefer Ubuntu. One massive plus being that it has better out-of-the-box support for drivers.
My server hardware doesn’t change often. Not a huge plus.
I was on the Ubuntu wagon before Debian. Many reasons I switched but the final straw was the bloat that kept being added to Ubuntu. Not huge but Debian uses less resources and seems to be more stable, in my experience.
I’d still use Ubuntu in some settings. Just not my lab VMs.
I ran Ubuntu Server on VMs in Proxmox for a while, and those VMs primarily hosted services via Docke containers, but I’ve since migrated to Debian for reasons.
So… yes! Lots of us do! We just often virtualize it rather than running it on bare-metal. That way, we can run 5 ubuntu servers with one physical box - a common homelab limitation.
I used to use Ubuntu VMs on Proxmox host but I’ve switched to Debian a year or so ago.
I’m not sure if I quali as a homelabber, but Ubuntu server is definitely runnning my Nextcloud as a snap package. Once I move it to proxmox it’ll still run as an os on vm, just to run the Nextcloud.
I use Ubuntu and Photon server to run any Linux applications I need on VM’s like DNS and Grafana. I have started to use vSphere tanzu to run containers.
