China respects all parties resolving economic and trade differences with the United States through consultation on an equal footing, but it will firmly oppose any party striking a deal at China’s expense, its Commerce Ministry said on Monday.
China “will take countermeasures in a resolute and reciprocal manner” if any country sought such deals, a ministry spokesperson said, addressing news about the Trump administration preparing to pressure other countries to limit trade with China in exchange for tariff exemptions from the United States.
Trump picked a fight with the biggest kid in the school right after insulting and backstabbing all his friends. Now he’s crawling back begging his friends to come and help him.
If Trump wants the US’s ex-allies to help, he better step down from the presidency. It is the only way I see anyone willing to help the US right now.
You can’t be serious. Trump stepping down?? Wants to help the US??
No one will stick their neck out for the US. Trump must step down and return sanity to America. This doesn’t fix relations, but it may signal the begining of a return to a healing position. Over a very long time, 50 years, the US may gradually recover some of that lost trust.
Hard to earn. Easy to lose. Even harder to win back. America, you played yourself.
Trump stepping down won’t do shit. This is a MAGA issue, and is exactly what they voted for.
Let it burn.
Right. The entire GOP needs to be in prison.
Except it’s Trump. He will never step down. He can’t admit he’s wrong on anything otherwise it’ll break his macho man persona of never being wrong and it’s not his fault.
The least admirable quality someone can have “I’m never wrong”
He steps down, then it’s Vance. If Vance steps down it’s Johnson. It doesn’t really get better from there.
I see your point but those allies your are talking about just want piece and trade and are willing to get it at any cost. Most of the EU is already on their knees and begging Mr orange to drop the tarifs and they will do what ever he wants. The tarif intimidations didn’t work on china but it sure worked on most including the EU
I too oppose deals being made at my expense…
This seems like a goes-without-saying level of obvious position to take, no?
I mean yes but also…
China “will take countermeasures in a resolute and reciprocal manner” if any country sought such deals…
It’s one thing to just say you don’t like something. It’s another to say you’re going to take a specific action as a direct result of them.
It‘s about who bleeds out faster and that‘s definitely China. No matter how you put it the USA holds a much stronger hand in this. Tankies can cheer China on all they want but this will hit their economy very hard.
Don‘t get me wrong it‘s a moronic dispute with no winners other than the occasional insider trading in the White House. And some say that‘s the point. However the way China handles this they just might be the biggest losers in the end. In order to save face, China risks losing everything.
I’m not sure.
We are here mainly because the business leaders sold out the core of our economy to enrich themselves thanks to cheap labor of an at the time backwards China. They had the hubris to think the workers replaceable but the leadership somehow magic.
Now they increasingly see China business leadership clearly emerging as an independent force that puts pressure on them.
They spent decades helping China gain independent capabilities and it’s too late to claw that back
About the only thing they are really hurt by are the export controls on chips and chip manufacturing technology, but they are getting there. Yes there’s a crunch in their export business that will hurt, but it’s easier to cope with that than just not having the facilities to build the stuff you want or the expansive labor force.
I am not so sure. Trump couldn’t even hold his moronic tariffs for more than a few days, before having to cave.
USA does not produce much besides services. China have a big surplus of production.
China also owns a huge amount of US debt. They can start dumping it which will increase the interest rate on the huge US debt. This would quickly put the US in a difficult position. Any solution besides just paying down the debt would weaken trust in the US, so they either have to take it or make everyone in the world lose faith in the current financial system with the US as it’s guardian.
No because the US has nothing substantial to offer up in exchange.
Agriculture? Nope.
Minerals? Nope.
Manufacturing? Nope.
Aircraft? Nope.
Cars? Hella nope.
Access to consumers? Depends on what’s being sold.
What are you talking about? The USA is quite literally the biggest producer and exporter of agricultural goods in the world and don‘t even get me started on patents and digital services. They are by far the richest country on earth. The only thing China has going for it here is recklessness towards their own people because believe it or not, there are worse places to be than the USA right now. Hard to comprehend, but sadly true.
Agriculture probably hurts a little. China could not care less about American digital services ( they largely banned them anyway) and if it comes down to it, they can totally ignore patent protection. They do have some issues with actual chip design and manufacturing, though that will likely see them improve if they have to.
Don’t know that China is a better place to be for the citizenry or anything, but the government and business leaders are in a better supported position than American counterparts in an economic split.
It might have been one thing if the US had continued to fixate on China and maybe isolate China, but he is simultaneously screwing with everyone in the world and tarnishing our image as comparatively “good guys” on human rights undermines our position. China may still be viewed as a bad actor, but our bad behavior might make them the lesser of the few evils.
