It is common in the West to hear the statement “China annexed Tibet in the 1950s”, which would imply that the West never saw Tibet as Chinese territory despite ROC also claims Tibet as part of China since its founding in 1912. So before 1949 when ROC still ruled the Chinese mainland, did the US or the West ever officially recognize ROC’s claim that Tibet is part of China?
