Today, there is a strong distinction in Jewish communities between groups such as Ashkenazi (from Ashkenaz – Germany), Sephardi (from Sephard – Spain), Mizrahi (Eastern, I think it refers to Arabian peninsula?) and a few other smaller groups like Romanites etc.
When did this distinction emerged? Where the groups ever isolated from each other?
