Hi guys! I excitedly tried to install a new SFP+ card into my Dell PowerEdge T420, only to be greeted with an error about exceeding the power capability of my server. Surprising that a mere PCIe card was the straw that broke the camel’s back, but there you are.

So I obviously need to replace the PSU with something that has more watt-age (my current PSU is 495W) but I’m having trouble finding PSUs on the second-hand market that are specifically for my server. Obviously, Dell doesn’t make PSUs that are ONLY compatible with a single model, there would be a range of PSUs that would work with the server, but I’m having trouble working out what that is!

I haven’t been able to find any documents or forum posts that give a list of all the Dell PSUs that are compatible with the T420 though. The closest I’ve been able to find are online stores that sell PSUs providing a list of compatible models, but some only give a short list, while others give a MUCH longer list, so I’m not sure how reliable these are.

Any ideas guys?

Yes they would make a psu that was specific to a single model.

Any compatible/optimal e.g higher capacity would be listed in the technical documentation.

Good idea! According to the service tag, mine has a 3GHW3. Looking up this PSU on the internet brings up stores that say this PSU is used in the R520 / R620 / R720 / R720XD / T320 / T420 / T620. Should that mean that any PSU compatible with these models should also work my in T420…?
