I don’t think Ukraine should have to sign a minerals deal with anyone in exchange for protection. What Russia did and is doing was/is wrong and no other country should be exploiting this. Freedom only costs a buck o’five. Not a minerals deal.

The USA has made itself irrelevant so why bother. No one will continue fielding US proprietary weapons now. Something like the F35 is a joke now. Any treaty with the USA is meaningless. I would not do any business with the USA at all for any reason if I was in any other country. I hate that I live in this embarrassment of a shit hole.

This deal is dog shit, and there’s no point in negotiating anything while the US president is a deranged Trump, imo. We need the European Union and NATO, so if Trump doesn’t want us to join, he can go to hell.

The weird thing about sovereign nations, they are sovereign.

A government can borrow 5 trillion in funds from banks in another country and just not pay it back. Sovereign nation, they can do that.

Sign a treaty saying that they won’t bomb the shit out of their neighbor. Then bomb the shit out their neighbor. Sovereign nations can do that.

Make an agreement with a delusional geriatric giving them mineral rights to half their country. Then invalidate it when the idiot is out of office. Sovereign nations can do that.

I think in Ukraine’s position, this wouldn’t be a good idea. They unfortunately need to keep to their agreements to keep the support of their allies. I think they’d be much better off to just not sign the agreement and let their European allies take over. Either that or sign something that makes Trump think he’s getting something when he’s really not (my understanding is that almost all of the rare earths now sit on territory occupied by Russia, so that’s likely to be what the original agreement was).

Europe needs to put troops in western Ukraine and say “come at me, bro” or they’re gonna end up having to do it anyway later against the stronger Russia.

EU membership too? Holy what a racket. “You can’t join our club, and you can’t join other people’s clubs either!”

Thay was Zelenskyj’s original suggestion that Trump twisted into this monstrosity.

Still useful, though. It has made Trump show his true intentions much more clearly, rallying civilized countries more firmly behind Ukraine.

No, EU. It’s been in the works for a while, in fact it’s part of why the war started.

An EU member Ukraine would make the EU independent on Russia or the US for that matter. It also comes with better security guarantees that Article 5.

In 1990 Poland and Ukraine had about the same level of wealth. Poland joined the EU and is doing much better then Ukraine today and that was already clearly the case before the war started. That is the case for other countries who joined the EU as well. In addition to that the EU is also a security alliance, with nuclear weapons and a massive military behind it.
