Yes, with all the warranted vitriol of a puppy. The war is clearly and objectively a farce, and any legitimate news operation would report it as such. At best we’ll get a milquetoast comment about how Trump contradicts himself every other sentence because the journalists are rightfully fearful that they’ll lose their jobs if they actually take a hard stance on the side of factual information.
And the goalposts are moved. The argument was that the media isn’t covering it all. Which is an embarrassing fucking statement to make and everyone knows that. So now we’re doing this, apparently an equivalent thing where objective fucking journalism is now the major crime.
Journalists should be providing objective information on which people make their own decisions. How the fuck can you not see that you’re exactly the same as the right? You are OPENLY demanding to be told what you want to hear.
And it’s not like accurately reporting has cast the war in a good light, Trump looks like an absolute fucking moron.
I’m not reading OPs comment as being about the media not covering the war. That would indeed be an absurd statement, I read it as a statement that the media not covering it as Trumps warm and not linking these earlier tweets about him being aware of using an Iran war to cover up something.

Of course they have been. People here just don’t read the news. They read snippets and memes and internet comments from random people. Going by AP’s coverage alone, you can’t think the war was caused by anyone but Trump.
What’s happening here are typical lazy generalizations of the “media”, which lumped into some single entity by these simpletons. These are the exact people who got us into this Trump situation in the first place. There have been countless times where I’ve seen a person claim “the media isn’t covering this” only to have a quick Google search reveal that most major networks had. Sadly, most prefer to believe the lie because it fits their immature and simplistic worldview.
In 2016, Trump made it ok to call what you don’t like “fake news” and to disregard real reporting. Now it’s infected both the left and right and the country has gotten much stupider.
The argument was that the news didn’t mention how Trump’s actions in Iran are exactly what he said Obama would do when he was struggling, which is true. It’s among many things the news isn’t reporting. I’m not saying the newspaper should make people’s opinions for them, I’m saying it should never let people forget that the facts show that Trump is a liar.
An article with the headline of “Trump Lies Again About Latest Oil War” would be an objective article upon which people could make their own decisions, but there’s really only one opinion to make from it, so we consider the news as having made it for them, but that would be wrong. It’s just that the opinion to draw is so obvious when so honestly reported that it seems like that’s the case.
The news doesn’t have to always report along the lines of “Trump said x, which contradicts his previous statement y.” That’s just called a lie. He’s lying. Reporting it any less bluntly only serves to obscure that fact from the vast majority of the people who never read past the headline anyway.
Here’s the problem with that. The media did report on these comments by Trump - both when he made them 2011-2013 through to the present.

I’m sure I’ll get “downvoted” to hell for not conforming the crowd here and providing verifiable information that disproves this claim. I personally think one of the worst things Trump has done is to allow people to lump the “media” in some amorphous entity that can be accepted or dismissed whenever it’s convenient for your argument. This has infected both the left and right.
Do you understand what my issue is with these “evil media” lazy simplifications? People are addicted to some kind self-righteousness buzz “sticking it to the man” and they willingly spread damaging misinformation simply because it fits their preconceived notions.
The rest of point just seems to be an issue with journalistic standards - them not using the specific words you want? That’s you wanting a Fox News equivalent telling you want to hear. Every single article/transcript posted above gives you the needed information to come to that obvious conclusion. I am not usually the “sky is falling type” but it is really starting to seem like social media has made this country significantly stupider. People refusing to read beyond a headline IS NOT the fault of the media. Headlines are not articles aggregators like Reddit or Lemmy encourage people to think they have the right to praise or criticize an article based ONLY on the headline - literally judging a book by it’s cover.
Alright, fair enough. I hadn’t seen any of those specific articles, but you’ve shown that the idea that there wasn’t any coverage is verifiably false. I wish there was a hell of a lot more to the point where nobody could miss it, but that’s a separate argument to make.
As for whether the news allows people to come to their own conclusions, I think the bigger issue is that people have already formed their own conclusions, and the news isn’t currently direct enough to shake those opinions. Not all opinions are made equal, and while I understand that my own opinions are just as susceptible to misinformation as anyone else’s, that’s all the more reason for the to be a system to put everyone - myself included - on the spot and force them to reassess what they believe.
People are meant to reassess their beliefs on their own, but they often don’t, as you’ve alluded to yourself with regards to the upvotes in this very thread. It’s no longer something I believe we can afford to ignore. The weak language currently used in media allows people who believe misinformation to continue doing so. I’m sick of waiting for them to come around; now I want to confront people to either see the truth or admit that the truth doesn’t matter to them, and I see the media as being the organization to force that issue.
A change needs to happen, one way or another. Sitting here staring into the abyss we’re slowly sliding into isn’t doing us or the world as a whole any good. Maybe there just isn’t a nonviolent way to do it, but I’d prefer to try something like a more direct media tactic before we continue our slow and steady march toward either revolution or even more largely unopposed fascism.

How would one define propaganda to avoid these laws being abused?
A simple solution would be to outlaw all opinion panels on broadcast television. No one allowed on the news that expresses an opinion of any kind. A reporter reports events that took place. The end. A hurricane hit Florida today with winds at these speeds. The end. A politician won the race with this many votes. The end. Two were arrested and are being charged with assault. The end.
Violate this law? Heavy fine. 3 strikes within a year? Organization shut down.
The problem is right now we have those reporters who report what happened, then it’s followed up by 5 talking heads that lie/gaslight the audience into believing what they want them to believe. THAT shit needs to be outlawed.

We have Truth In Advertising laws, which prohibit a company from making false claims. Fox News has won multiple lawsuits by claiming they aren’t really a news program, they are an entertainment company. That’s fine, but then they shouldn’t be called “News.” A News program should be expected to adhere to accepted neutral journalistic standards, which FoxNews does not. If they want to call themselves FoxOpinion, or FoxConservative, or Fox Politics, etc., that’s fine, but they shouldn’t be allowed to present and promote themselves as news.
I like where you’re going with this, I think it could be doable if there was a heavy focus on fact-checking.
I like not giving a platform for opinion on what is supposed to be a platform for news.
That being said I wouldn’t mind hearing opinions from people with qualifications on dedicated platforms for it. I really like the idea of separating that stuff though.

I’d argue we’re already in a depression. The “economy” is being held together by debt, buy now pay later, and fear of homelessness.
We likely won’t get some major event that causes some mass spontaneous strike like that.
The depression will happen slowly and controlled. Material conditions will decline. More people will die from lack of healthcare. More people will live out of their cars or with family.

The stocks will continue to go up. Since stock prices at this point are just a reflection of the capitalist ability to exploit labor. The exploitation of labor in the “first world” is being increased slowly to that of the third world. The “economy” is largely separated from the conditions of the working class in America.
The economy is being held together by duct tape and bubble gum, and 1 bad tech day will bring it all crumbling down. Doesn’t help that oracle laid off over 50,000 employees in the last couple months, several tech companies have hedges their entire future on AI bubble that’s already showing signs is ready to pop…
This bubble is quite different in my opinion than something like 2008. I believe it represents the concentration of wealth under fascism. It may “pop” but the resulting fallout will most likely be the conversion of America to a war economy. Which will sustain the hunger of capital further. And we might even get that conversion before the bubble pops.
These AI data centers aren’t being built so they can create chat bots that sell you shit. They’re being created for mass surveillance computational power and AI warfare.
I may be wrong. But one thing I do know is true is that when the bubble “pops” it’s not going to get better for the working class. It’s not going to result in some uprising against fascism. It’s going to be a massive fuel for xenophobia and white supremacy like we’ve never seen before.
So, all I can do in the mean time is try to reach more people and message through work in DSA. In hopes that we have enough resistance to it to be meaningful.
The bubble popping isn’t gonna mean you can finally afford a house. It’ll mean that your grocery store runs dry and people die not being able to get healthcare.

We’ve been in much longer and much more involved military commitments and not once has your situation occurred.
No war in modern history has shut off a supply of energy to this degree. China is literally currently holding up the world economy and is the only reason the world is not spiralling into chaos right now. They cut their purchases of oil by 40% to assist other east Asian countries almost entirely dependent on oil from west Asia. That cannot last forever. Even with China moving full speed ahead into renewables.
Oil is a global commodity. The US and it’s people will be just as heavily impacted as any other nation unless our government literally bans oil exports. Which this admin will not do.
