I’m looking to get a small rack - right now, I have some homelab equipment (NUCs, desktop/tower “servers”, desktop NAS, etc) but none of it is rack mounted, so I want to take the opportunity to organize some of it.
The main reason for this, though, is that I’ll soon be inheriting a PowerEdge R630 which I really don’t want to just put on top of a desk or the floor. This server is 2U and is 30" deep and weighs 40lbs.
Is there a good “homelab” quality rack that is 10-15U, supports servers that are 30" deep, and can be easily hung (or modified to be hung) from standard U.S. floor joists in an unfinished basement? (Floor joists in the U.S. are typically 2x8s or 2x10s spaced 16" or 24" apart, depending on code.) I don’t want to break the bank here and spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on an enterprise-grade rack.
Thoughts? Is this common or am I crazy? 😄
