My reply to these replies here about Copyright being a bad idea (besides that Nintendo never pursued a Copyright claim with Palworld)…

I think Copyright is important to preserve rights. Without Copyright, we couldn’t have Open Source licenses like GPL. And the industry wants to sell products ideally not pirated, to make profit. Which is not a bad thing, because that encourages competition. Now that does not mean there are no loopholes and evil companies (and individuals) wouldn’t abuse it. But that does not mean that the entire idea of Copyright is bad or “bullshit”.

The idea of copyright in general may not be bad.

However, its current implementation is very much horrendous.

The current implementation is not really “horrendous”. It works well enough that its a net positive. Even with its flaws (because no law is perfect), I think we are better off with these Copyright laws around the world than without it. I never found anyone giving an example what could be done better; people just say its bad. In example, what specifically is so horrendous about the current “implementation” of Copyright? And how would it be better?

IMO you can seriously fix all copyright and patent law by halving their current duration. In the USA that means copyrights are author’s life + 35 years and works for hire should be something like 50 years. Patents similarly go from 20->10 years.

    I think it’s all a bit silly.

Palworld absolutely leans into the controversy in their marketing, but fundamentally it’s an Ark-like, on a different platform. It’s really not competing with Nintendo sales.

Hence, it’s kind of ridiculous Nintendo pursued this so aggressively. It’d be like Bethesda Game Studios relentlessly going after Stardew Valley on iOS because they both have “NPCs with schedules,” when fundamentally, their games are nothing alike.

Not really. Palworld isn’t infringing any copyright. Nintendo was not pursuing copyright infringement, but patent infringement for gameplay mechanics.

The concept of copyright isn’t bullshit but here is outright legal abuse. Palworld does not infringe on anyone’s copyright. It’s an original work inspired by another. Imagine if nobody was allowed to make first person shooters because they would be infringin on Doom.

The concept of copyright isn’t bullshit

It kinda is tho. Culture always worked by inspiring and copying others. Also were talking about intellectual property here that can be multiplied by a simple copy paste. The cost is marginal.

I think someone who e.g. invents a cure for cancer should be rewarded by society, but it’s immoral for them to keep it secret and privatly profit off of that

Also Idgaf if someone who creates a fantasy world has to deal with others that like to add to it. Fanfics can be really good. It may be annoying to the OP but who are they to ruin the fun for others

I would download a car if I could

I support anything that takes shots at or a market share of pokemon. Pokemon fandom needs to chill out.

Palworld existing and doing well is directly beneficial for Pokemon fans, because it may lead to better Pokemon games. Probably not good games, because this is still Nintendo, but an upgrade is an upgrade.

    Nintendo is such bullshit.

They have Pokémon but don’t they also make Pikmin? It’s practically the same name, but different. Digimon is the same as Pokémon but they don’t sue each other?

Then there’s Animal Crossing, Pokémon Pokeopia or whatever it’s called, the Hello Kitty one, and Stardew Valley and all its clones/similars.

Breath of the Wild was just a Zelda-themed Dark Souls. Super Mario Bros. has had a ton of spinoffs/ripoffs.

    But yeah, go after Palworld.

Oh, let’s not forget that Metroid exists because Ridley Scott said “no” when they wanted to make an Alien video game. That’s why that one boss is named… Ridley.

    Nintendo is such bullshit.

Okay, I’ll poo-poo on Nintendo’s business practices as much as the next guy, but I have to ask:

Breath of the Wild was just a Zelda-themed Dark Souls.

Pray tell, how is Breath of the Wild anything like Dark Souls?

in broad strokes youre right, but the palworld designs are so egregiously ripped off.
