They so obviously don’t believe it is a mental illnesa themselves. If they did then they wouldn’t be dismissive of the medical professionals giving healthcare. Not to mention that people with mental illnesses generally don’t receive the same level of bigotry, hate and legislation against their existence. Says a lot about a person when their response to somebody with what they perceive as a mental illness is to bully and harass them.

My uncle went on a rant that god made people think they were transgender as a test to see if they would choose him. I asked “What if god made those people transgender to test if YOU would be nice to them?”

I’m not invited to his house anymore.

It’s not really nuanced. For any of that to make sense the starting point has to be grounded in hate. You have to believe that being trans, or engaging in whatever xyz acts (sexual or otherwise) with or as a trans person is sinful. On top of that you have to even agree and believe in the very concept of sin and there being some reward/punishment system for if you do or don’t sin.

So yeah, no there’s no nuance when the starting point for your opinion is “being trans = automatic sinner.”

I’m not Christian, but from what I’ve read of Jesus, he’d want us to love and respect trans folk. You know, along with the widow, the orphan, the disabled, the foreigner and so on.

What the bible shows us is that hatred of the other, to the point of violence, is an old, old problem, and we actually have to put effort into exercising tolerance.

I learned this stuff from Sesame Street and Saturday-morning cartoons in the 1970s, a message that seems to have been lost since.

You defeat it by treating them like people who have been ruined by a dangerous violent mental illness. Possibly the only one that makes people more likely to hurt others than themselves. Cut that special exception out of the DSM and just diagnose it for what it is.

Transfer all that stigma where it belongs. Be condescending and cautious as you would about anyone else shouting about their imaginary friend in public.

Gender dysphoria and other dysphoria CAN be the result of illness, and CAN go away once said illness (like depression for example) is treated.

A religious upbringing however will almost always result in deep mental (and often physical) scars and should be considered child abuse.

Medical technology and hygiene practices have advanced enough that circumcisions don’t make much of a difference.

But that same medical technology has not yet advanced enough to let me grow my foreskin back, and that upsets me.

You might find Foucault’s “The Birth of the Clinic” to be fascinating. Doctors, for the longest time, didn’t know germ theory. The clinic evolved accordingly and iirc (not sure if this is in the book) the first doctor that was convinced of their presence was institutionalized. (Ignaz Semmelweis)

Also, as an aside, water would not clean germs off in a way that will make the area actually clean. I tell my kids this every time they run the water only to wash their hands but THEY JUST WON’T LISTEN!!!

You and I already know all this. But a few thousand years ago, supposedly, their God told them that if they wash with water it makes things clean. They cut their dicks off anyway and still kept believing in their God, and forced other people to do it when conquering and enslaving them.

So I stand by my point that there is zero excuse to be found here.

Technically I believe there’s a stretching process involving weights, but that’s as much knowledge of it as my mind was willing to retain. I’d argue if someone needs their foreskin so bad they’re basically willing to further mutilate their body to get it, that’s it’s own mental illness.

Reddit had r/foreskinrestoration and similar subs but nothing similar has grown pun intended here on Lemmy. It took 4 or 5 years of dedicated stretching by hand and with a few different devices but the head of my penis is fully covered and in some ways the circumcision is reversed, and I’m happy with it. Still not the same but much better in terms of sensitivity, no regrets, and not really that much effort involved.

My uneducated guess is it’s a form of narcissism in the sense that it gives people a reason to not take responsibility for their actions and not have accountability for the things that happen to them.
