I’ve seen similar in a dream. The bottom of the canyon was a place where suicides prowled endlessly. When they were ready to leave, they had to climb the canyon and basically confess to the preacher that maintained a church like that. He was a sort of social worker that helped suicide deaths recover when they were ready.
Sounds like that would make for a cool short story
