Good thing Carney maintained his 46% voter approval rating and his liberals won the 3 most recent by-elections securing a legislative majority now he can go full mask off by backdooring e2ee messaging, having the rcmp rip open people’s letters without a warrant, forcing telecoms to retain metadata for a year, giving american spy agencies the ability to survey canadians without oversight. Bill c-22 is a steaming pile of crap.

I wish HTTPS and CIRA DNS and my pihole with unbound and future things would help me sleep at night, but knowing that the government is pushing for privacy to be nonexistent is disappointing. Well at least I know advertisers know next to nothing about me, and it is becoming increasingly harder for them to spy on me as I move more and more to self hosting.

They promise not to abuse all the ridiculous new powers, but the law will have officially and perhaps irrevocably moved to enable an approach that can only be seen as a totalitarian nightmare if some future government is less completely scrupulous than the saintly Liberals of the present no doubt will be, when it comes to carefully constraining their use of the legal tools they’ll inherit.

Worst of all, I’ll have to find a non-Canadian VPN service to use. It’s not like I’m doing anything top-secret, but just on principle. Canadian electronic services will no longer be trustworthy. Only those which can credibly promise to abandon Canada before giving in to a secret order to spy on their users will be safe, and those are uncommon. But they’re not non-existent. At least for the time being we will still have Signal, Delta Chat, Mullvad, and so on. Maybe the “warrant canary” will be the big feature everyone looks for in years to come.

That’s the thing, voters didn’t vote for a Liberal majority. Last year’s election gave the Liberals a minority. There’ve been multiple floor-crossers from the Conservatives post-election, and then they had the majority.

Regardless it’s in poor taste to immediately blame the masses when something so widespread doesn’t go well. I think history and current events has proven more than enough how little that works, if ever. People really aren’t capable of truly acting as part of a perfect whole.
