So I bought this really cool dual x99 server board from AliExpress with 2x m.2 slots, 2x2.5gbe nics, and solid expandability. I am now testing it out and am seeing a funny RAM (or PCIe or Power) issue I hope you experts can comment on, or direct me for help on.

Issue (as far as I can tell):

My PCIe 2.0 graphics card (GT 430) fails to load drivers when all 8 DIMMs are populated. Yet, if I remove any one stick of ram—doesn’t matter which—it operates correctly at PCIe gen 2 and drivers work fine. Same issue no matter which CPU’s PCIe it is. I do not have another GPU to try, but I’m in the market for a gen 3 card (Houston TX, hit me up if you got one, preferably 12+ gb vram)

PC Details:

  • Dual CPU motherboard came running a BIOS from Sept 2024 that is not available from their website https://jginyue.com/index/Article/show/cat_id/48/id/74
  • 2x Xeon 2630v4
  • 8x assorted (samsung and hynix) 2133 2R4 DDR4 15CL ECC RDIMMS from eBay. Each DIMM is its own channel (so each cpu has quad channel)
  • I had no issue at all booting all sticks to unlicensed Win10 pro.
  • GT 430 operates solely from PCIe power
  • 1000w Gold Raidmax PSU (RX1000 AE) that comes with a single CPU cable that splits into two 4+4 cable

More Details:

  • I can’t really trust any sensor reporting as its a grabbag with this board. For instance, only one CPU has a power sensor in HWmonitor, and it doesn’t go higher than ~30 W even under full load, and performance is as expected (cinebench r23 ~14k with both CPUs installed) so should be closer to the TDP of 85W.
  • When running single CPU, the mismatched ram runs in quad channel.
  • I tried clearing CMOS with and without all dimms populated.
  • I ran memtest84+ for 2 and a half passes, no issues.
  • I went through a lot of settings in the BIOS but came out empty handed. The only things I couldn’t find were Uncore Voltage or System Agent voltage.
  • I tried manually inputting RAM freq and timings, and tried upping the voltage from 1.2 -> 1.3. I couldn’t find a sensor for this that i trusted, so maybe didn’t take.
  • I tried using a second gold rated PSU to power one of the CPUs (unfortunately don’t have another dual cpu PSU)
  • I reseated the second CPU and looked for bent pins. Will do the first one as well soon, before trying to load a bios from the manufacturer page.
  • I tried forcing the pcie slot to gen 2 and 3, did not help.
  • VRM heatsinks might be hot?

I’ll extend this list when people ask more questions

Could be power related… could be BIOS… help!
