which one do you prefer and why?

    About a year ago, I switched my list from MAL to AniList (due to a dumb announcement from MAL which I don’t even remember).

    As for animeplanet; heard of it but never used it

    Some differences between the two (from the view of AniList);

    • AniList has a LOT of tags, which are voted on by users. You can search for spesific tags and add a minimum tag-vote% to your search.
    • AniList doesn’t list Openings/Ending
    • AniList has less reviews compared to MAL (like 39 vs 337 on Takopi's Sin)
    • AniList related entries feels less organized (but I was already using chiaki.site to find all related episodes/seasons)
    • AniList excludes/misses some spesific episodes, such as; recaps, manner movies, AI-generated (see Twins Hinahima)
    • For me, AniList has a nicer UI, but I guess that’s subjective so decide for yourself

    Despite some missing features, I do really like AniList. I also have AniList Extras(=userscript), which adds some MAL features to AniList (openings/endings, MAL-rating, hyperlink between the MAL/AL page). AniList is now my main source, but I also check the MAL page sometimes.

    I also saw you were asking about finding new shows in another comment, so I’ll finish off with my method for that.

    • Searching for spesific tags / tag-combinations / genres / …
    • On AniList/MAL, each show has user-voted recommendations, so check those on shows you liked
    • Check out the studios/producers for shows you liked
    • Scrolling thru the most popular shows (either by rating or members) if you’ve not watched that many popular ones
    • Lastly is just checking out random anime you see; be it from fanart, memes, OP/ED songs you hear

    I would avoid MAL because:

    • They had some controversies regarding removing their API
    • They were bought by controversial people

      Gaudiy is a web3 company that engages in a fan-economy business based on blockchain technology for the entertainment industry

    Generally MAL.

    Anilist is the most handy IMO, and if I want quick simple information, I might use it. But if I want more in depth information, reviews, recommendations and the like, MAL is definitely my preference.

    anilist is goat, myanimelist is ooold, so I guess it might have more info like other comment says. but anilist is just modern convenience

    I’ve stuck with AniList, just due to the interface. It has native dark mode support and works better on mobile.

    Take a look at the user interface of each one and see what you prefer. MAL / AniList users tend to have a strong preference for one UI over the other (I’m on team MAL for that one). I’m not very familiar with animeplanet but I’d also recommend checking out Kitsu.io (or Kitsu.app now, I guess) especially if you want to log western animation like Avatar TLA, My Little Pony, or Arcane.

      i think kitsu.io doesn’t recommend me new shows that are similar to others, which i think is an essential feature. how else do i find new shows?

        Personally I find that the more anime I watch and the more “anime-literate” I become, I naturally develop a kind of backlog regardless of recommendation algorithms. For example: I watch Mawaru Penguindrum -> I search up the director -> I find out that director Ikuhara is famous for making several other interesting surreal anime -> Yurikuma Arashi, Sarazanmai, and Revolutionary Girl Utena added to the backlog.

        I also definitely get a lot out of browsing random people’s profiles and adding stuff that they have on favorites (I have like 45 profiles bookmarked in my browser). This is personally my favorite way to find stuff, just jumping between reviews and profile and conversations in comments.

        And then of course there’s other sites where you can find recommendations like lemmy, r/anime, or Youtube. It’s hard to find good anitube nowadays, but there’s still some really good channels out there if you dig. ZNoteTaku and The Bellman are some of my favorites that I’ve found. Trixie the Golden Witch, too. Maybe STEVEM, hazel, and I’ve heard kenny lauderdale is supposed to be good. (This could be its own thread).

        But anyway I’m kinda rambling. There’s plenty of ways to find recommendations. Personally I don’t find recommendation algorithms necessary. But if you do, then maybe stick to AniList or MAL. Personally I use MAL but it doesn’t really matter. If you have friends with anime lists, use whatever they use.
