The light source is ~60 degrees to the right, low to horizon, unobstructed by other mountains. Most of the is sky is golden, except the storm from coming from the mountain range. there is a haze on the horizon between the mountains and the viewer, catching the low angled sunlight, which the viewer isn’t subjected to, as the dense trees to the right cast shadow on the viewer. There is a gap in the trees before the fog. There must be a larger mountain to the right which is also casting shadow on the visible mountains. Of course I’m making this up.
I know you’re embellishing quite a bit, but honestly you’re not far off. The 60° estimate is actually pretty close if we’re using the center of the painting as the polar center of the coordinate frame.
I see what you’re saying and the mist certainly does help with the perspective a bit. Personally though I think the mist takes away focus from the rest of the piece and overwhelms it.
I do agree with that. It’s just the best way I can come up with to make it all fit haha. 100x better than I can do regardless. If I can’t Undo, I’m screwed.

only a little bit though, mainly if the mountains had some gold peaks it would sell it i think
