Too many people on here just desperate to hate our players. It’s just another symptom of how the oil money has killed football.

You can’t appreciate players now, you have to want to replace them with someone else at all times.

It feels like a very American attitude as well, where every player is expected to be traded away or improved upon with a new draft pick. Players are just replaceable names and numbers.

All the Toney and Neto shouts when the season just started. The way people talk about transfers is perverse they’re obsessed with it.

It’s just the whole internet thing. They don’t actually enjoy watching games, but theyve convinced themselves they want to be football fans and talking about transfers on the internet is the only bit they actually enjoy.

Unfortunately, this precedent was set eons ago by man like Ferguson and more recently Pep. You could be a club legend and a fan favourite but if he felt you had outgrown your usefulness, you were out, no matter how big or popular you were. Pep’s hitrate in recent times has been even more alarmingly accurate, Aguero, Cancelo, Sterling, Jesus, all of these man contributed heavily but were binned off the moment he saw an upgrade. It’s cold, brutal even but it’s one of many ways he’s managed to keep them where they are.

Of course it helps when the money you can spend is basically limitless so you can keep rolling the dice, keep signing expensive players until something sticks well enough but all that means to a club like ours where money is a limiting factor is that we need to try to be even more crafty with our transfers and probably even more ruthless to get every upgrade wherever can.

Yeah, if the English media has taught me one thing it’s that the British are calm and don’t live to turn their heroes into villains. The old stiff upper lip anat.

No I meant more to do with sport than culture in general. Players are eminently replaceable in us sports. At Professional levels basically all sport is predicated on maximising value out of players contracts. Even to the extent that good players are allowed to walk or traded because their contract is expiring and you can get someone cheaper.

Even in college sports which I’ve always thought of as being most akin to football in terms of how fans interact with it, the players are there for 3-5 years maximum.

Let’s not get too attached to any player because none of them will be here in two years time just shouldn’t be a thing in the premier league.
