Feels like what people don’t understand about those who want to see Ramsdale get a run now and have been a bit of critical of Raya, is that it’s a directly proportional response to the amount of unfair criticism Ramsdale was getting in the first place.
Ramsdale made a few errors last season, but I swear there was very little chat about him being directly responsible for us being poor. Until of course, we signed Raya then it was like this place had become a chrome extension for FB Ref, with stats posted every 5 minutes and spider charts showing that Raya was better at kicking the ball long at Toneys head, than Ramsdale was at Jesus.
Sorry, but if you’re replacing the number one for our best season we’ve had in years, you don’t get to make mistakes. That’s why half of you wanted Ramsdale dropped in the first place.
He gives it away to the opposition in dangerous areas but it’s ok because he looks calm and composed while doing it.
Honestly, i think Mikel isn’t going to be as bothered about mistakes as long as he continues to try to play in the way he’s been instructed to, taking risks to draw the press, passing it out from the back and only going long when there are viable options like Jesus out wide or Havertz up top. Basically the same rational as having one of the fullbacks invert, whether it’s Zinchenko, Partey, Tomi, they all have been instructed to do it and can do it to various degrees of effectiveness but that’s the basic requirement and not necessarily how well they might defend or not make a mistake.
Jury’s still out on when whether Raya is better or deserves to be no1.
But there is no denying that he adds something different to our team, and enables us to play out from the back better.
