Pilot did declare mayday 2 minutes before touching down, so seems to have had the opportunity to abort landing, or jettison fuel, which would not normally be full enough on landing to burn everyone.

Fair enough - bear in mind that I posted 6 hours ahead of you, and I was getting info from a BBC live feed, not the posted article.
Regardless, I think we can agree that this is a horrendous tragedy and hopefully a full and accurate explanation can be found.
