Tbf, we don’t know the ins and outs of this. For example, there is a chance the club wants to spend in January, and signing Raya in the summer might have hurt our January in terms of FFP.
Say the club had £75m to spend before we were hitting the limits of FFP, saving the £30m on Raya now, could give us £75m to spend in January, compared to £45 had we signed Raya in the summer.
Obviously complete speculation, but we as fan have no idea one way or the other. It could be we were in danger of FFP right now, or it could be good planning to ensure we will not be in danger if we spend again
