from my experience with Lemmy the vibes people give off are either:

depressed genderqueer ppl escaping reddit that hates capitalism,
    or,
depressed dads escaping reddit that hates capitalism

    both love doom 1993.

There’s definitely room for more happy people in the mix. I try my best to inject humor and whimsy here and there, while above all else trying to stay engaged with the types of topics I’m interested in (explaining things I know, asking about things I don’t know, and generally keeping topics alive if they’re good topics I want to continue).

I generally delete my draft comments that come off as rude, before posting them, because I’m not sure this place needs more negativity.

They tried this the next year with gene engineers and a furry convention, but it did not end well

This is exactly what happened for my favorite tech support call of all time was. Worked support for a biotech firm and the site director and his EA went to some conference out of state. Went out of my way to make sure nothing would expire and they could use the VPN, usual due diligence and such. Get a very paniced call on the last day and they say there is nothing wrong, but the EA was freaking out as a ton of nerds in costume just showed up. I did some digging about the venue and found out it was the same con I attended in high school.

Spent the next while explaining what anime and anime conventions were to a very eastern-european middle-aged woman and her boss. Oh the tales of tech support.

A few years ago I attended PAX Unplugged in Phily. PAX Unplugged is a tabletop gaming convention. Think your classic DND and eurogamer crowd. But there was also a marathon going on at the same time, and the marathon had their own convention in the same convention center. So you had both the tabletop gamer crowd and the marathon athletes sharing the same space and streets for several days. It was glorious.

I know it’s hard to get a hotel room in dragon con but just once I want some one to happen to have a business meeting. They book a hotel room and are just utterly confused about all the other guests…

Mixing Amway with Shmoocon, however, was a very bad idea. Fun for the hackers and social engineers, though.

Meanwhile, I attended a security conference last week and right next door was a…medical insurance conference.
