The US Secret Service said the decision to treat the procedure at the Capitol as a “national special security event” was made after they received numerous calls from politicians, including Washington’s mayor.
The agency said the classification will allow for “significant resources” at local, state and federal levels and a “comprehensive security plan”.

Well yeah, only Presidential elections are confirmed by Congress, and they are every 4 years.
The first Super Bowl after the 9/11 attacks, which was held in New Orleans in February 2002, was given the same designation.
This makes sense since this was less than 6 months after 9/11, and there was high security everywhere. I don’t see how it’s related to the election though.
