The Brazilian government has launched its biggest ever operation to remove thousands of cows owned by illegal land grabbers from indigenous territory in the Amazon rainforest.
Three helicopters, a dozen vehicles and a heavily armed corps of police and environment rangers are carrying out the cattle drive, which criminal gangs attempted to block by setting fires on the route, destroying bridges and intimidating drivers.
Operation Eraha Tapiro (“Ox Removal” in the language of the Assurini Indigenous people) aims to restore state control over the Ituna-Itatá Indigenous Territory, which suffered some of the worst deforestation and invasions in the Amazon during the previous presidency of the nationalist Jair Bolsonaro.

It feels almost surreal to have an environment minister that actually cares about the environment… though truth be told, the previous government lowered the bar so much that doing absolutely nothing would still have been a clear improvement.
If doing nothing is already an improvement, this must be a whole other level. It’s forreal super cool to hear this, but there I’m wondering how sustainable this type of action is with opposing right wing politicians. I mean, it feels kind a no brainer that this is the right thing to do, but the previous administration apparently got away with some other views?

Bolsonaro was a fuck and he was rabidly supported by the Brazilian evangelicals, a movement started by American missionaries that now is a sizeable minority that is 100% committed to emulating American evangelicals including supporting assholes like Bolsonaro, fucking with the heathen indigenous, and pretending that mowing down the rainforest is a fucking moral imperative. And they’re only growing in political strength.
