I’m training our new Fiber Optic Technician at a job site. We needed to terminate LC and ST ends for some controls equipment. First I would have designed the whole project using standard fiber enclosures using adapter plates, but of course they didn’t ask the only expert they have. So we were forced to work with the constraints given.
This was done by a previous Fiber Optics Tech who was not properly trained. As you can see the cables are free to move. This caused a pinch point for the individual fibers and resulted in a few of the broken according to the OTDR results. Also the fibers left for connections to equipment didn’t follow any color order.
We terminated all 48 fibers and used long patch cables to connect the equipment. I explained that splice-on-pigtails are to delicate for use in the pipe and controls enclosure. We also secured the cable ends by using a conduit clamp.
In the end we did this four more times, each resulting in fixing broken fibers. Overall a very good lesson in termination.
