Cruz was making an impassioned speech about reaching a “bipartisan agreement” on crime before he made the blunder

“How about we all come together and say ‘let’s stop attacking pedophiles,’” he said.

Not sure why they put a “must” in the headline. Apparently proof-reading is optional at the independent.

I mean that’s like the one thing LLMs are good at. They’re not gonna have “let’s” and compute “must” as the next token.

I bet someone wrote “we must stop” and then checked the quote and “fixed” it. Aka stupid meatbag shit.

No, it’s just that the news media doesn’t pay sub-editors any more.

I surprised they didn’t just copy and paste it? Or maybe the article used to have that typo but I find that less likely.

Yes, the article headline itself had the typo. They have fixed it now.

“gaffe” implies he has mad some attempt to backtrack or present a corrected sentence. He said it.

    Journalism is so cooked

FYI, “Gaffe” doesn’t imply he has made an attempt to backtrack. It’s just a blatant mistake or faux pas.

I think you’re actually right in what you mean though.

“Gaffe” implies he’s embarrassed. There’s no way he’s embarrassed, he’s incapable of feeling real human emotions.

I still don’t know what word he actually intended to use there instead, unless he was trying to normalize the concept of accepting pedophiles.

I guess “attacking” was supposed to be “protecting”.

Fair, that does make sense, and at least fits with other things he’s said.
