I have often wondered if its worth upgrading my 5600X to a 5800X3D.

So there’s nothing “new”, all are just optimized or binned chips…

By new, I mean with new features, like borrowing the new iGPU from Zen4 APUs, even with lower CUs to match the lower memory speeds. Or getting a new video engine (there’s no AV1 in AM4)…

I already have 5800X for my main PC and a 5700G on my server, but I will gladly replace the 5700G with something newer (especially newer video codec engine) just to avoid buying a dGPU when AV1 becomes more mainstream.

Exactly. 5700X3D is perhaps a faulty batch of 5800X3D’s to begin with in the first place.

The engineering team does have tools to simply fuse off certain elements inside a CPU. So also the amount of cores, cache and what more. Nothing gets wasted in the world of silicon. Perhaps we’re getting a 3 Core 6 Thread X3D CPU in return that we can unlock to a fully working 4 core 8 thread X3D variant. Lmao.

AM4 has to be the GOATed platform of all time at this point. I can’t believe the mileage I’ve got out of my shitty mobo haha.

I’m upgrading from a 2600 to the 5800x3d on my day off this Wednesday. Super pumped, can’t wait to see what the hype is about!

This is pretty amazing. My motherboard doesnt officially support the older cpus but everyone ive tried in it works. Currently running a 2700x in it. Will likely upgrade to this or the 5800x3d next year.

Being able to use this board for so many generations is awesome.

Someone in 2017: “I’ll get a b350 motherboard and a cheap Polaris GPU, by the time they’re obsolete I’ll have enough saved to upgrade.”

That same person in 2026: “Okay, time to try to build a $20,000 gaming PC…”

            Not far from my path.

X370 when released, kept the mobo becauae no $$$ for cpu. Focused on work and forgot about it until 2700x came out. Used that… paired with my olde 1070 which i got from launch.

Then took the 3080 for gpu upgrade to drive 1440p UW. Found the 2700x struggling. Upgraded to 5800x3d this year as a birthday treat.

Now gonna change the mobo for a b550. The x370 is going to my wife rig with the 1070. Will be a home lab and clan server for games as well.

AM4… thank you AMD… Goat of goatses of all goat time platform. Respect!

If these hit the market it certainly kills the AM5 glazers narrative that AM4 is a pointless, dead platform 😂

To be fair it’s not really further innovation at this point. Selling under spec 5800x3d’s as a lower model just makes economic sense. AMD has been doing that since the phenom days with unstable x6 cpus being core locked and sold as x4.

People out here acting like AMD is looking out for the poor when they are justing rebranding a cpu to prevent losses.

Big upgrade. Your power needs will depend more on your GPU. There are calculators online to estimate your need. 650 should be enough though.

So do I, but agree with other reply that likely not due to tiered pricing. I regret not jumping on 290 and will probably pull the trigger next time it’s under 300.

Micro Center still has a few in stock at 280 depending on your location.
