I’m always curious how long people spend staying at their desktops. My laptop has six virtual desktops and I can’t see the background on any of them.
One for each uni course and one for general use, and they all have 2-3 windows open. It’s super handy for school since I can just swipe and pick up where I left off on every course.
Edit: That’s not to take away from a gorgeous desktop. It looks really nice.
This is why I like window transparency for certain apps. That way I can set the desktop background to something fairly neutral, then set window transparent and blur it so I can always sort of see what’s behind. Idk, it makes everything feel a bit lighter
I usually have 10 workspaces on all my setups. 2 of them will be unoccupied, so whenever I leave my desk I switch to that empty workspace (when nobody is around). When I come back my comfortable desktop welcomes me with a wallpaper that is easy on the eyes. Thats pretty much the only time I actually look at the desktop , apart from a brief moment after login of course.
I can appreciate that. I wonder if I can set a rule that it displays a certain workspace after unlocking…
From “too many damn Linux memes” to “look at my heavily modified desktop” in 72h, I’m proud of you my friend :D
Edit: removed racist term unknowingly used.
Haha thank you ヾ(⌐■_■)ノ♪
They grow up so fast. :')
I wasn’t aware of the racism connotations nor the connections to car culture, as English is not my first language. I thought it was some unixporn inside joke and never questioned that term.
I’m sorry for using that term and have edited my message.
it’s ok! it’s just good that you actually recognized it. some people dig in their heels
Nice, but 99% of time you won’t even enjoy this beauty of hard work, since it will be covered by your apps.
He is gonna make every window 75% transparent now😌
Exactly. If I’m looking at an empty desktop it means I’m not really using my computer for anything. I might just as well go for a walk and check the weather myself.
PRESSURE 30.4 inHG
Do Americans really use inches of mercury to measure air pressure? Even millimeters of mercury would feel weird for me in weather context. I’ve seen mmHg used mostly in medical and chemistry stuff. I guess it really is anything but metric for you guys.
Thousandths of a hogshead gang represent.
You made your KDE desktop to look like Gnome with widgets?! WTF?! I thought it was gnome at the first glance.
Correct!
I can make my openbox look like i3 with ceramic tiles all over :)
What are you using for all of the stats/info?
Those look like the plasma widgets that come with KDE
Regular plasma customizable widgets. That’s the beauty of KDE.
Yep and they have a built in transparency option!
Might be good to post on !unixporn@lemmy.ml, the offshoot of /r/unixporn on Reddit. Always need more people posting there! :)
What exactly took you all day?
Just fussing around with options and seeing what I liked. Loading up widgets and breaking them. Oh oh there was the whole top panel transparency saga that took me forever to figure out. Couldn’t decide on a panel layout for a while flopping things around.
Right on! Sometimes the smallest things in Linux can be so time consuming, but with it as long as you’re having fun and learning 🤘
I’ve been thinking about setting up a dashboard that I can just let run in the background on my TV or something, the weather over a nice outdoor screensaver or something, maybe important notifications.
This is a really nice setup!
Thank you!!

Yeah that’s fair. The widgets just make me feel like I’m smarter than I really am.
Clone it in case your SSD dies.
Is conky still a thing in 2023?
Cool setup btw
No, they’re plasmoids with the background removed.
Noticed a really really faint among us shape. Someone pull me out of my misery.
The fuck bro now I see it and cant unsee
Love KDE.
I’d say time well spent. Good job! :P
Thank you very much, kind stranger!
